Her Naked Skin

By Rebecca Lenkiewicz
Directed by Emily Ling Williams
Lady Celia Cain, like thousands of other women of the Suffragette Movement, are serving time in Holloway Prison in their fight to gain the vote. Inside, she meets a young seamstress, Eve Douglas, and her life spirals into an erotic but dangerous chaos.

Initial Ideas

I was inspired by archive spaces and the evolving timeline of women’s history. I aimed to create a production that felt both current and deeply rooted in historical acuracy. By designing the set as an Archive of Women's History spanning from 1913 to 2025, I aimed to ground the work in historical context while highlighting the ongoing relevance of women's voices and struggles today.
The suffragettes weren’t distant figures; they were disruptive, strategic, and often conflicted. I was interested in these contradictions and how they speak to the pressures women still face when stepping into public space. It felt important that the work didn’t sit in the past as something complete or resolved. Instead, I wanted it to feel alive — to spark questions, discomfort and recognition. For an audience now, I felt it would matter that this history doesn’t feel like a museum piece. It should feel relevant — something we’re still living through.
