Stick Fly
Written by Lydia Diamond
Directed by Jade Lewis
The affluent, African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective partners home to meet the parents for the first time. As the two newcomers butt heads over issues of race and privilege, long-standing family tensions bubble under the surface and reach a boiling point when secrets are revealed.

Initial Ideas

For Stick Fly, I wanted the LeVay family to feel honest and specific — especially through how they dress. Starting from our 2005 setting, I looked at early 2000s influencers in sport, music, and fashion, imagining which public figures might shape each character’s style. A key focus for the director and I was the contrast between what the LeVays wear inside the house and what they wear when they know they’ll be seen — that obsession with public image. I made the choice for them to return to their polished, performative costumes at the end of the play, to show their resistance to change. All except Cheryl. Flip, for example, mirrors his father’s old-money look, and his outfits always meet the strict ‘Vineyard Golf’ dress code — feeding into that country-club persona he’s clearly proud of.
